According to the U.S. Department of Justice, from late 2020 to 2022, Mayor Wang is accused of representing the interests of Chinese government officials together with Ning Mike Sun. They ran a website called "U.S. News Center," targeting the Chinese American community and posting content favorable to the Chinese government.
Investigators believe that Mayor Wang posted articles received from Chinese officials on the site via the WeChat mobile messenger. In June 2021, she shared a post written by the Chinese Consul General in Los Angeles, which refuted allegations of oppression of the Uyghur population in China's Xinjiang region.
The article included claims by the Chinese side that there was no genocide or forced labor in Xinjiang. The Department of Justice also provided evidence that Mayor Wang captured and sent the number of views of the post to Chinese officials. When the Chinese official responded, "Excellent," Mayor Wang reportedly replied, "Thank you, leader."
Federal authorities stated that the charges Mayor Wang has agreed to admit constitute a felony and could result in a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Sun, who worked with Mayor Wang, pleaded guilty to the same charges in October last year and is currently serving a four-year sentence. He was also registered as the treasurer for Mayor Wang's 2022 election campaign.
Arcadia is a suburban city northeast of downtown Los Angeles with a high proportion of Chinese residents. Mayor Wang was elected as an Arcadia city council member in 2022, and in this city, council members take turns serving as mayor.
