Appointment Letters to Be Awarded on May 20, Three-Year Terms to Follow
The National Science & Technology Institute (NST) has appointed Seung Park, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Seoul National University, as the new President of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), and Seokmin Shin, Professor of Chemistry at Seoul National University, as the new Director of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology.
On May 19, NST announced that the 242nd regular board meeting had approved the appointments of the new leaders for the two institutions. Both new heads will receive their appointment letters from NST Chairman Kim Youngsik on May 20 and will serve three-year terms until May 19, 2029.

View original imageSeung Park, who was appointed as the new President of ETRI, graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Seoul National University and earned his Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. Since 1994, he has served as a professor at Seoul National University, holding positions such as Director of the Informatization Headquarters. He has also served as President of the Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, a full member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, and as a researcher at AT&T Bell Laboratories in the United States.
President Park is expected to play a key role in strengthening ETRI's research competitiveness in the fields of information and communication technology (ICT), such as artificial intelligence (AI), sixth-generation mobile communication (6G), and next-generation networks, as well as in shaping ETRI's digital technology research direction.

View original imageSeokmin Shin, who was appointed as the new Director of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology, graduated from the Department of Chemistry at Seoul National University and obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Chicago in the United States. Since 1995, he has served as a professor in the Department of Chemistry at Seoul National University, holding positions such as Dean of Academic Affairs and Head of the BK Chemistry and Molecular Engineering Program. He has also served as President of the Korean Chemical Society, President of the Federation of Korean Chemical Societies, and as a member of the Planning and Coordination Committee at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS).

Director Shin is expected to lead national strategic technology research in the fields of chemistry and materials, as well as strengthen research and development (R&D) competitiveness in carbon neutrality and advanced materials.
