Asia's top science prodigies are gathering in Busan, as the Asian Physics Olympiad is being held in the city.
The Busan Metropolitan Government (acting mayor Kim Kyungduk) announced on May 18 that the '2026 Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO 2026)' will take place in Busan until May 25.
The Asian Physics Olympiad is an annual international science competition designed to discover future science talent and promote academic exchange between countries. This is the first time that South Korea is hosting the event.
This year's competition is attended by students and delegations from 27 Asian countries. The event began with the arrival of participants on May 17 and will conclude on May 25, following the opening ceremony, theoretical examinations, experimental examinations, and closing ceremony.
The participating students will be evaluated on their critical thinking and problem-solving skills through theoretical and experimental tests in the field of physics. In addition, exchange programs among students from participating countries will be held.
During the competition period, participants will also take part in tours of major tourist attractions in Busan, visits to marine and science facilities, and traditional culture experience programs.
The opening ceremony will be held on the morning of May 18 at the university theater of the Daeyeon Campus, Pukyong National University. The event will be attended by Kim Kyungduk, acting mayor of Busan, Koo Hyukchae, First Vice Minister of Science and ICT, and delegations from participating countries, totaling about 450 people.
The Busan Metropolitan Government has established a support system for accommodation, transportation, and interpretation for the country delegations, as well as safety management and medical response systems.
