Yongsan Cultural Foundation Opens First Special Exhibition "Samgak G7" on May 13
Reinterpreting Samgakji Gallery Street
26 Works by 7 Artists
The Yongsan Cultural Foundation (Chairman Lim Hyoungjoo), an affiliated organization of Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Heeyoung), is holding its first large-scale special exhibition since its establishment, titled "Samgak G7: The Place of Beginning," from May 13 to July 12 this year.
The exhibition will be held at the first-floor Popup Hall of the Yongsan Cultural Foundation (274 Itaewon-ro). It is a special exhibition that reinterprets the flow of Korean art, which was historically centered around the Samgakji Gallery Street, from the perspective of contemporary art. The exhibition title "Samgak G7" symbolically combines Samgakji and the seven participating artists.
Seven established artists working in painting, photography, and installation art are participating, presenting a total of 26 works. The participating artists are Daniel Baker, Shin Soyeon, Woo Jongil, Jung Soongyeom, Choi Jangchil, Thomas Morgan, and Han Youngwook. In addition, works and archives of the Western-style painters Kim Sooyoung and Cho Sangwoon, who were active in the Samgakji area in the past, will also be introduced.
Through this exhibition, the Foundation aims to newly highlight Yongsan's cultural assets by connecting the history and local identity of Samgakji with contemporary art, and to expand the intersection with contemporary artistic practices. The exhibition is also expected to serve as a starting point for revitalizing the Foundation's multipurpose cultural space and establishing a regionally based hub for culture and the arts.
Viewing is available daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and admission is free. The opening ceremony was held on May 12, one day before the exhibition, with participating artists and related personnel in attendance.
Lim Sangwoo, CEO of the Yongsan Cultural Foundation, stated, "This exhibition reflects the Foundation's direction of connecting the local community and the arts," and added, "We will continue to discover Yongsan's unique cultural identity through collaboration with local artists and consistently present a variety of cultural events so that everyone can enjoy art as a part of daily life."
