US Supreme Court Extends Temporary Order Allowing Mailing of Abortion Pills
The U.S. Supreme Court has extended its temporary order allowing the continued mailing of abortion pills. This means that, while the justices privately deliberate on the matter, medical professionals can continue to prescribe the abortion pill mifepristone remotely and have it delivered by mail.
On May 11 (local time), Bloomberg News reported that the Supreme Court has decided to maintain this measure until May 14. Previously, the Court had temporarily blocked a lower court ruling that would have restricted remote prescription and mail delivery of mifepristone.
The state of Louisiana is seeking to overturn the Biden administration-era FDA decision that allowed remote prescription of mifepristone. Louisiana argues that the FDA did not sufficiently review safety concerns when implementing this measure.
Mifepristone became eligible for mail delivery in 2021 when the FDA suspended in-person dispensing requirements due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The FDA officially eliminated those requirements in 2023.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, 63% of abortions within the official U.S. medical system in 2023 were conducted via medication, with most involving mifepristone. States with abortion bans, such as Louisiana, have strongly opposed remote prescriptions, arguing that they undermine state laws.
