The city immediately conducted on-site inspections, implemented traffic controls, installed safety fences, and took other emergency safety measures before beginning an investigation into the leak.
As a result of the investigation, a leak was found in an aging water pipe beneath the road that had been in place for over 25 years. The city simultaneously carried out leak detection and excavation work, promptly commencing restoration efforts.
Subsequently, the leak site was sealed off, the water main was repaired, ground stabilization was performed, and the road surface was restored. Full restoration was completed promptly by the afternoon of May 9.
In particular, the city focused on ensuring public safety by closely inspecting for possible cavities under the road and checking the condition of the surrounding ground throughout the restoration process.
Along with this repair, Namyangju City is continuously strengthening proactive safety management measures to prevent ground subsidence.
Since last year, the city has expanded ground-penetrating radar (GPR) inspections and conducted intensive checks on areas vulnerable to ground subsidence.
In fact, through recent GPR inspections covering a 50-kilometer section within the city, 26 underground cavities were discovered in advance and rapidly restored, reinforcing a proactive response system.
Additionally, in cooperation with the Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Corporation, the city is conducting ongoing detailed inspections of roads in areas with concerns about ground subsidence and around major underground development sites. Emergency inspections of vulnerable sections after heavy rainfall and safety management around aging water and sewage pipelines are also being carried out in parallel.
