Third Truth and Reconciliation Commission Formed: Ten Members Elected by National Assembly
Kim Namjoo Appointed as Non-Standing Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission
On the 23rd, the National Assembly held a plenary session and elected 10 members recommended by the Assembly to the 3rd Commission for Truth and Reconciliation and Past Issues Settlement (hereinafter referred to as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission), including 2 standing commissioners and 8 non-standing commissioners.
As standing commissioners, Lee Hojung, professor at Sogang University Law School, recommended by the Democratic Party of Korea, and Jang Youngsoo, emeritus professor at Korea University Law School, recommended by the People Power Party, were appointed.
Professor Lee has been active in civil society, having served as the executive director of the Catholic Human Rights Committee and the chairperson of the Institute for Information and Human Rights. Professor Jang has served as an advisory member of the National Assembly Constitutional Amendment Special Committee, a member of the Constitutional Court System Improvement Special Committee, and a policy advisory member of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea. He also served as a non-standing commissioner of the 2nd Truth and Reconciliation Commission for four years.
On the 23rd, during the 7th plenary session of the April extraordinary session held at the National Assembly, the proposal for the election of members to the Commission for Truth and Reconciliation and Past Issues Settlement was passed. Yonhap News
View original imageAmong the non-standing commissioners, those recommended by the Democratic Party of Korea include Kim Youngjoo, attorney at Law Firm Jihyang; Kim Jeongha, activist at Disability and Human Rights Foot Action; and Jeong Wonok, head of the Institute for Culture and Society. Kim Ungi, attorney at Sein Partners; Lee Dongwook, former member of the 5·18 Democratization Movement Fact-Finding Committee; and Choi Changho, attorney at Jeongron, were also elected as nominees recommended by the People Power Party.
The appointments of Lee Hyunju, head of the Park Jongcheol Center, recommended by Speaker of the National Assembly Woo Wonshik, and Park Raegun, board member of Human Rights Foundation Saram, recommended by the Basic Income Party as a non-negotiating bloc, were also approved. The 3rd Truth and Reconciliation Commission will consist of 13 members, including Chairman Song Sanggyo, standing commissioner Kim Guiok, and non-standing commissioner Park Gubyung, all appointed by President Lee Jaemyung, as well as the Assembly-recommended members.
During the plenary session, the appointment of Kim Namjoo, candidate for non-standing commissioner of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, was also approved. Candidate Kim is the managing attorney at Law Firm Dodam and has served as chairperson of the National Assembly Public Officials Ethics Committee since September last year. He has also served as a member of the Review Committee for Mandatory Reporting Requests of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, a member of the Subcontract Dispute Mediation Council, and a member of the Fair Economy Promotion Group for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Small Business Owners.
