"3.31 Million Passengers in Q1" Jeju Air Leads LCCs in Passenger Numbers
24.2% Increase in Passenger Numbers Compared to Last Year
Jeju Air announced on the 15th that it recorded the highest number of passengers among domestic low-cost carriers in the first quarter.
According to the Aviation Information Portal System of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Jeju Air carried 3,311,358 passengers in the first quarter, marking a 24.2% increase compared to 2,665,579 passengers in the same period last year. Of these, domestic routes accounted for 1,099,756 passengers and international routes for 2,211,602 passengers, which represent year-on-year increases of 27.4% and 22.7%, respectively.
The number of flights operated reached 19,231, up 10.1% from 17,463 flights in the first quarter of last year. This includes 6,218 domestic flights and 13,013 international flights, which expanded by 12.4% and 9.1%, respectively.
Notably, the growth rate in passenger numbers (24.2%) far exceeded the growth rate in the number of flights (10.1%), indicating that demand increased much more sharply than supply expansion.
Jeju Air's seat occupancy rate for the first quarter of this year stood at 91.9%, approximately 3.1 percentage points higher than the average for domestic airlines, which was 88.8%. In particular, the domestic route occupancy rate in March was 91.7%, surpassing the overall average for domestic airlines on domestic routes in March, which was 83.6%, placing Jeju Air at the top tier.
As part of corrective measures following a corporate merger in January of this year, Jeju Air has fully utilized its allocated Gimpo-Jeju slots, operating four additional round trips per day on the Gimpo-Jeju route since March 29. Starting May 12, the airline will also begin trial operations twice a week on the Incheon-Jeju route, aiming to enhance convenience for foreign travelers entering via Incheon Airport and traveling to Jeju.
