Amid the "energy crisis" triggered by soaring energy prices, a specialized high school has attracted attention by presenting an innovative energy-saving model.
Gyeongbuk Biomeister High School (Principal Cha Kyuhyo) announced on April 9 that it has achieved both public utility cost reduction and carbon neutrality through its energy-saving project, the "GBM SSEM (School Save Energy Movement)", which has been in operation since June of last year.

The school went beyond simply encouraging reduced usage; it maximized efficiency by introducing technical systems.
Automatic control of heating and cooling devices: The school implemented a system that automatically shuts off power 10 minutes before lunch break, the end of classes, and the end of evening self-study sessions.
This system completely prevents electricity waste in empty classrooms and also helps prevent fires.
By automating controls according to set times, such as during dormitory check-outs, the school reduced inconvenience for students and staff while minimizing energy waste.
The most notable achievement is the complete overhaul of the dormitory hot water system.
To address the chronic issues of hot water shortages and frequent breakdowns associated with the old storage-type boilers, the school invested approximately 45 million won in February this year to replace them with instant hot water boilers using the "cascade" system.
The cascade system connects multiple small boilers in parallel, operating only the number required according to hot water demand.
This approach maximizes efficiency by consuming only as much energy as needed.
The results of these facility improvements have been demonstrated in numbers.
According to the school’s analysis, LPG consumption decreased by about 40% compared to last year.
In particular, the hot water supply capacity has nearly doubled, greatly improving the living conditions for the approximately 160 students residing in the dormitory.
Kim Taekyun, the school’s administrative manager, stated, "In the midst of the energy crisis, the school’s small efforts have led to tangible budget savings," adding, "The adoption of the low-cost, high-efficiency cascade system and the ‘GBM SSEM’ campaign should be spread nationwide, so that public institutions can take the lead in practicing carbon neutrality."
