hy has announced its intention to change consumer selection standards by highlighting the 'Strain Number.' The message is to check not just which probiotics are included in a product, but specifically which strain they are.
The strain number is a unique identification system for probiotic strains. Even within the same species, the functionality and properties can differ depending on the strain. hy assigns a unique number to each strain it discovers through its own research, only after verifying both safety and functionality.
This began in 1995, when hy succeeded in localizing probiotic strains for the first time in Korea and assigned the strain number 'HY8001.' Over the past 30 years, hy has continued its research and now possesses 99 distinct strains. The central research institute has built a strain library with over 5,100 types, secured 106 patents, and acquired 61 patented strains.
Among these, several strains have been recognized for their functionality and safety both domestically and internationally. Three have been approved as individually recognized functional ingredients by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, while four have been registered as New Dietary Ingredients (NDI) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The recently commercialized 'HY7017' was also recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety as an individually recognized functional ingredient that may help boost immune function. 'HY7017' is a strain discovered in ginseng roots, developed over five years with an investment exceeding 1.1 billion won. Among individually recognized ingredients in Korea, HY7017 is the only announced probiotic that may help with immune function. It is also notable for being a naturally derived strain with scientific evidence supporting its benefits.
hy is currently applying this strain to its own product, 'Empro Immune,' and is clearly indicating related information in the product details. Individually recognized ingredients are only granted to materials whose functionality and safety have been verified, and exclusive use of such ingredients is ensured for a certain period. With this new certification, the number of individually recognized ingredients held by hy has increased to nine.
The product packaging features a strain number QR code logo to enhance visibility. Consumers can scan the QR code to immediately access information about each strain's unique characteristics and ongoing research.
