The first "Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City Launch Preparation Meeting" was held at the Government Complex Seoul on the same day, attended by Kim Minjae, Vice Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety; Hwang Giyeon, Vice Governor of Jeonnam Province; and Ko Gwangwan, Vice Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City.
At the meeting, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety shared a step-by-step implementation plan for the launch of the integrated metropolitan city, while the two local governments discussed their preparation status, implementation plans, and the support needed from the central government.
They agreed to swiftly proceed with essential launch preparations, including the enactment of enforcement decrees related to the special integration law before the local elections on June 3, as well as the integration of organizational structures, finances, and local ordinances.
After the local elections, until the launch of the integrated metropolitan city on July 1, the first provisional council session will be convened to pass essential ordinances, and the integration of public services and key administrative systems will be carried out sequentially.
Jeonnam Province will implement a departmental responsibility system for each area of the initiative, conduct policy councils and internal briefing sessions in parallel to monitor progress, and proactively address any contentious issues.
The government will establish a dedicated department within the "Inter-Agency Support Team for Local Administration System Reform" to provide close support for the integration process of the two local governments.
