View original imageThe Democratic Party of Korea is facing accusations of "pitting party members against one another" after it reversed disciplinary measures against Nonsan City Council members in South Chungcheong Province who were suspected of colluding with the People Power Party in violation of the party line, and after it became known that, during their disciplinary period, these councilors read a congratulatory address on behalf of Supreme Council Member Hwang Myungseon.
On February 14, some Democratic Party members hung banners criticizing the leadership of Representative Jeong Cheongrae, protesting that "not only has the promise of a fair and transparent primary been broken, but the very principles themselves have collapsed."
Council members belonging to the Democratic Party, which holds a majority in the Nonsan City Council, finalized the party line in June 2024 for the second half of the Nonsan City Council term, deciding, in the presence of Council Member Hwang Myungseon, to elect Council Member Jo Baesik as council chair.
However, Democratic Party council members Jo Yonghun, Kim Jonguk, and Min Byeongchun, who belong to the majority party holding 7 of the 13 seats in the Nonsan City Council, violated the party line and formed the council leadership with the support of People Power Party council members. The party imposed a heavy disciplinary measure on the three council members last year, suspending their party membership for two years.
Nevertheless, on January 16, the Democratic Party’s Supreme Council lifted the disciplinary measures against these council members and granted them eligibility to run in the local elections scheduled for June 2026.
As a result, figures who violated the party line can now re-enter the nomination race, prompting criticism that "the prospect of a fair primary has vanished."
In particular, after it became known that Supreme Council Member Hwang Myungseon had these council members, whose party membership had been suspended, read congratulatory remarks at a local event, criticism has emerged that "the party itself has undermined the strictness of its own disciplinary measures."
One party member criticized, saying, "The very act of openly interacting with figures whose party membership was suspended is itself a message," and added, "Is this not proof that the disciplinary measures were nothing more than a formality?"
In protest, Council Member Jo Baesik left the Democratic Party on February 11, stating, "I cannot accept a structure in which the person who tried to uphold the party’s official line is isolated, while those who violated the party line are reinstated."
Another Democratic Party member pointed out, "Party members who upheld the party line are leaving the party, while those who joined hands with what we call an insurrectionist party are being reinstated. This means the organization’s standards have been turned upside down."
The member went on to say, "Does the leadership of Representative Jeong, which claims to represent an era of party member sovereignty, have any right to criticize the People Power Party as an insurrectionist party?"
Although Representative Jeong Cheongrae has emphasized a "fair primary" and "party member sovereignty," some party members in the Nonsan area are criticizing him, saying, "If he lifted the disciplinary measures on city council members who colluded with the People Power Party, and effectively maintained political contact with them even during their disciplinary period, then where is the fairness?"
For this reason, suspicions have also been raised that "while they speak of party member sovereignty, in reality this is nothing more than a political deal with a particular faction."
