Shinsegae Liquor & Beverage Unveils Bordeaux First Growth Grand Cru Gift Set... 9.99 Million Won, Limited to 7 Sets
Shinsegae Liquor & Beverage has partnered with GS25 to launch a Lunar New Year gift set composed exclusively of First Growth Grand Cru Class wines from France's five top chateaux, regarded as the pinnacle for wine lovers worldwide, in celebration of this year's Seollal.
Shinsegae Liquor & Beverage announced on the 12th that it will offer a set comprising five bottles of France's highest-grade 2016 vintage wines, priced at 9,990,000 won per set based on the global average market price, with only seven sets available. In terms of both rarity and symbolism, this configuration goes beyond the existing standard for holiday gifts.
The "First Growth" designation for Bordeaux wines from France is not merely a basic quality grade. For the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris, under the direction of Napoleon III, the French government officially classified wines from the Bordeaux region based on price, reputation, and trading records. Among these, "Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Latour, Chateau Margaux, Chateau Haut-Brion, and Chateau Mouton Rothschild," which stood at the very top, came to be known as France's five First Growth chateaux.
King Louis XV of France called Lafite the "Wine of Kings," and Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, stored large quantities of Haut-Brion and Latour in his personal cellar. Winston Churchill of the United Kingdom once said, "Margaux is the most elegant wine in my memory." Mouton Rothschild became a cultural icon through label collaborations with artists such as Picasso and Dali.
All of the wines included in this Lunar New Year set received scores of 99 points or higher from each of the world's most influential wine critics, Robert Parker and James Suckling. In particular, the 2016 Bordeaux vintage is recorded as one of the finest vintages of the past 20 years, having been praised as "the perfect balance of classicism and power."
