Naju City announced on the 10th that, after African swine fever was confirmed on the 9th at a pig farm located in Bonghwang-myeon, it held a situation management meeting chaired by Mayor Yoon Byungtae to conduct an emergency inspection of quarantine conditions and discuss response measures, including strengthening the cooperation system among relevant departments.
The city has set up control posts around the affected farm and is tightening controls on vehicles and personnel entering and leaving the area, while blocking external spread of the virus through swift culling and carcass disposal.
Since December 20 last year, Naju City has been operating an integrated Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters at the highest level to prepare for African swine fever, highly pathogenic avian influenza, foot-and-mouth disease, and other livestock infectious diseases that fall under the category of social disasters.
The city has formed eight working units, including the General Situation Unit, Culling Unit, Human Infection Prevention Unit, Public Relations Unit, Manpower Support Unit, and Supplies and Equipment Support Unit, and is maintaining a 24-hour emergency response system.
The city has issued a culling order for the affected farm and imposed movement restrictions on farms within a 10-kilometer radius of the quarantine zone. It is also focusing its administrative capacity on preventing the spread of the disease by guiding all 85 pig farms within the jurisdiction and their foreign workers to strictly comply with biosecurity and quarantine rules.
The city plans to maintain its reporting, dissemination, and information-sharing system centered on the General Situation Unit until the situation is resolved. In particular, it is doing its utmost in slaughter and shipment management to prevent any additional spread and to ensure that there are no disruptions to the supply of pork during the Lunar New Year holiday period.
The city is conducting daily on-site clinical inspections of farms and performing detailed tests in parallel when shipping pigs to slaughterhouses and transporting manure. It is also conducting pre-distribution inspections of carcasses at slaughterhouses and has distributed multilingual card news and video materials on quarantine rules to strengthen quarantine management for foreign workers.
In addition, by the end of February, the city plans to conduct environmental inspections of the shoes and clothing of all pig farm workers, as well as composting facilities, to carefully manage potential contamination of surrounding areas.
