Seoul Auction Collaborates with Phillips' Dropshop to Introduce Sunwoo Kim Editions Overseas
Sunwoo Kim Unveils New Works on Phillips' Dropshop
Three Edition Prints and Three Original Paintings Presented
Seoul Auction announced on December 8 that it will introduce new edition works and original paintings by Sunwoo Kim, known as the "Dodo Bird Artist," to the global market through a collaboration with the online platform "Dropshop" operated by the global art auction house Phillips.
The works to be presented include three types of edition prints, each in a limited run of 30, as well as three original paintings. The pieces have been on public display at the Phillips New York preview since December 5, and official sales will begin on December 10 at midnight (10 a.m. local time on December 9) via the Phillips Dropshop website.
Dropshop is Phillips' curation-based e-commerce platform aimed at global collectors, serving as a channel that actively introduces the work of promising contemporary artists. Previously, works by Emily Mae Smith, Kyne, Gongkan, and Edgar Plans have been introduced through Dropshop.
Sunwoo Kim is an artist who explores the dreams, possibilities, and freedom of contemporary people through the narrative of the extinct dodo bird. After visiting Mauritius, where the dodo bird became extinct, in 2015, Kim has reinterpreted the dodo-known for its inability to fly and subsequent extinction-as a being preparing for a new flight. The dodo, reborn on canvas, offers comfort and inspiration to viewers as a symbol that awakens inner energy and refuses to settle for reality.
Recently, the artist has expanded public recognition by collaborating with various global brands such as Bulgari, Starbucks, and LG. Kim has also actively showcased work in major Asian art markets, including a solo exhibition at Tsutaya Ginza in Tokyo, as well as in Taipei and Singapore. The Dropshop project is especially significant as it marks the artist's first global e-commerce launch, directly connecting Kim's work with international collectors in Western markets, including New York.
