Responding to Online Scams: Former Police Chief Kim Changryong Appointed as Ambassador to Cambodia
Kim Changryong, former Commissioner General of the Korean National Police Agency (age 61), has been appointed as the new ambassador to Cambodia, where online scams targeting Koreans have become a significant issue.
On the 28th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Kim has been appointed as the ambassador to Cambodia.
The new ambassador, Kim, graduated from the National Police University with a degree in law and has served as Director of the Public Safety Bureau at the National Police Agency, Commissioner of the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency, Commissioner of the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency, and Commissioner General of the National Police Agency. After retiring from the National Police Agency, he worked as a distinguished professor at Dongguk University's College of Police and Criminal Justice and as a visiting professor at Seoul National University's Graduate School of Public Administration before being appointed as ambassador to Cambodia.
Given the recent surge in online scams perpetrated by criminal organizations operating mainly in Cambodia, which has become a major social issue, the appointment of a former police chief is seen as a strategic decision.
