Ministry of Labor Launches Labor Inspection of Kakao Over 'Long Working Hours'
Petition-Based Inspection Initiated Following Employee Reports
The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced that it will begin a labor inspection of Kakao starting on the 17th, following recent concerns over excessive working hours at the company.
This inspection was initiated after Kakao employees reported long working hours within the company and requested a petition-based inspection. As a result, the Seongnam branch of the Central Regional Employment and Labor Office, which has jurisdiction, convened a Petition Review Committee and decided to proceed with the inspection.
A petition-based inspection refers to a system in which an inspection is requested under the Petition Act regarding violations of labor-related laws affecting multiple employees.
The petitioners claim that, under Kakao's flexible working hours system, they worked beyond the legal working hours during the settlement period.
The Ministry plans to examine the overall management of personnel at Kakao, including whether excessive working hours occurred, how the flexible working hours system is being operated, and the company's leave and holiday policies. The Ministry will also focus on inspecting other potential violations of labor laws, such as wage arrears.
Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Younghoon stated, "If any violations are identified during this labor inspection, we will take strict action in accordance with the law." He added, "Companies must achieve innovation and growth on the foundation of workers' health and safety," and pledged to strengthen labor inspections to ensure that such practices and workplace culture become established in the future.
