National Treasure Yeosu Jinnamgwan Regains Its Grandeur After 10-Year, 20 Billion Won Restoration
Completion Ceremony on the 21st
Restoration of Columns from 68 to 70
54,000 Roof Tiles Reproduced Using Traditional Methods
After a decade-long large-scale restoration project, the national treasure Yeosu Jinnamgwan will hold its completion ceremony on October 21.
Originally rebuilt in 1718 (the 44th year of King Sukjong's reign) by Lee Jemyun, the Naval Commander of Jeolla Left Province, as the guesthouse of the Jeolla Left Naval Command, Jinnamgwan is the largest surviving government office building in Korea's provinces. Although it was designated as a national treasure in 2001, it suffered damage due to structural distortion, ground subsidence, and wood decay over time and during the Japanese colonial period.
From 2015 to this year, the National Heritage Administration and Yeosu City invested approximately 20 billion won to dismantle and repair the building. Sixty-eight damaged columns were restored to the original seventy, and 54,000 roof tiles were newly produced using traditional methods.
With a focus on restoring the building as closely as possible to its pre-colonial form, Jinnamgwan has regained its former grandeur and historical value. The project involved experts such as members of the Cultural Heritage Committee and restoration technology specialists, as well as Korea's top traditional architecture artisans. Their collaboration is credited with greatly improving the accuracy and quality of the restoration.
