Seongnam City to Develop Wirye Story Box Site, Aiming for Construction Start in 2028
Largest Public Library and Sports Facilities Planned for Long-Idle Site
Attracting High-Tech Companies to the Region
Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Shin Sang-jin) announced on October 20 that it has finalized the development direction for the area around 594 Chang-gok-dong, where the container cultural space "Wirye Story Box" is currently located. The city will pursue the project in earnest, aiming to begin construction in the first half of 2028, with the focus on establishing a cultural and sports complex facility and attracting high-tech companies.

Seongnam City plans to enhance industrial competitiveness by attracting companies related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and creating synergy between regions, while also expanding the insufficient cultural and sports infrastructure to improve convenience for residents.
At a project briefing session held on October 15, these development plans were shared with local residents, who welcomed the news that the long-undeveloped site would finally be put to new use.
Ahn Sang-il, a resident of Hanbit Village in Wirye-dong, said, "I am very pleased that a public library and sports facility, which residents have long hoped for, will be built on a site that has been neglected for 10 years. I look forward to the building being completed quickly so that residents can use it as soon as possible."
Currently, about 45,000 people live in Wirye-dong, and with 10,000 new residents expected to move into the Bokjeong 1 District, the residential population is set to increase further. However, the per capita area of public cultural and welfare facilities in Wirye-dong is only half the Seongnam City average, and there are no public sports facilities at all.

In addition, the city aims to attract advanced companies in Fourth Industrial Revolution sectors such as artificial intelligence (including semiconductors and fabless companies), smart mobility, and secondary batteries, thereby creating local jobs and strengthening the industrial base at the same time.

Mayor Shin Sang-jin stated, "If the long-undeveloped Wirye Story Box site is transformed into a complex space where advanced industries and culture coexist, it will greatly enhance the self-sufficiency of the Wirye residential area and the quality of life for citizens. Starting this year, we will fully implement the administrative procedures and do our utmost to expand the living culture infrastructure that citizens can truly experience, with the goal of commencing construction in the first half of 2028."
