Polluting Businesses Caught... Busanjin-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority Takes Action After Second-Half Inspection
Joint Public-Private Inspections Focused on Areas with Frequent Complaints
at Machun, Saenggok, and Jisa Industrial Complexes
Which businesses discharged environmental pollutants in the Free Economic Zone?
The Busanjin Haegyeong Free Economic Zone Authority (Commissioner Park Sungho) announced that, as a result of inspections conducted from July to September 23 at Machun Industrial Complex, Saenggok Resource Circulation Complex, and Jisa Science Industrial Complex, violations were detected at 11 business sites in the third quarter.
This second-half inspection utilized the mobility of joint public-private inspection teams, which were organized by local residents, including the Ungdong 1-dong Pollution Eradication Committee, Saenggok Waste Disposal Countermeasures Committee, and Noksan Village. By focusing on areas with a high frequency of complaints and conducting both day and night unannounced inspections, the authority was able to prevent pollution incidents and gain the trust of residents.
A total of 131 sites were inspected in the third quarter. The violations identified included: ▲ failure to maintain operation logs (3 cases), ▲ failure to file required reports or change notifications (3 cases), ▲ failure to conduct self-monitoring of air emissions (2 cases), ▲ neglecting to repair or maintain pollution prevention facilities (2 cases), and ▲ illegal storage of waste (1 case), totaling 11 violations.
The Free Economic Zone Authority imposed administrative actions such as criminal charges and corrective orders on the violating businesses, and levied fines totaling approximately 8.6 million won.
As of the third quarter of this year, the overall compliance rate with environmental regulations has improved by 2.8% compared to last year. The joint public-private inspections are evaluated as having raised awareness among businesses in the Free Economic Zone about the importance of environmental management.
As a follow-up measure, the Authority plans to thoroughly re-inspect and manage the corrective actions of violating businesses, distribute comprehensive promotional materials on compliance with environmental laws, and strengthen voluntary management by regularly sending self-inspection reminder messages to businesses via SNS.
