National Institute of Forest Science to Transfer and Commercialize Berchemia berchemiaefolia Extract for Hair Loss Prevention
The National Institute of Forest Science announced on September 4 that it has entered into a technology transfer agreement with Iru Medical Co., Ltd., granting a non-exclusive license for the state-owned patented technology of a "composition for preventing hair loss or promoting hair growth containing extract or fraction of Berchemia berchemiaefolia."
The technology transfer agreement was concluded based on the results of commercialization research. Iru Medical reviewed the institute's technology at the "InterBiz Bio Partnering & Investment Forum 2025," received technology consulting, and agreed to a technology fee of 100 million won per year for the transfer.
Iru Medical plans to apply this technology to hair conditioning products and shampoos within the year.
Previously, the Forest Biomaterials Research Center at the National Institute of Forest Science confirmed the hair papilla cell strengthening effect of Berchemia berchemiaefolia branch extract and completed the patent registration based on these findings.
Additionally, the institute developed a prototype in the form of a topical agent, verified the stability of the raw material formulation and safety for clinical application, and completed registration in the International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary, among other efforts to advance commercialization.
Berchemia berchemiaefolia is an evergreen broadleaf climbing plant native to Jeju Island and the southern coastal regions of Korea. The branches of this plant are utilized as materials for preventing hair loss and promoting hair growth.
