Chungnam Province will transform Gongju into a premier tourist city by expanding the Hanok Village and developing the Geumgang River Regional Garden.
On September 3, Governor Kim Taeheum announced during his visit to Gongju-through dialogues with residents and a press conference with journalists-that the province will steadily implement the following initiatives: expansion of the Hanok Village, creation of the Geumgang River (Eocheon to Jukdang) Garden, relocation of the Food Safety Management Certification Institute and the Livestock Environment Management Institute, and hosting the International Chestnut Industry Expo in 2028.
According to the "Gongju City Ancient Capital Preservation and Promotion Implementation Plan (2024-2028)," the province plans to establish four Hanok Villages with a total of 1,300 traditional houses by 2036.
The Geumgang River Regional Garden will be completed by 2028 with an investment of 35 billion won, and the province aims to have it registered as a national garden by 2031.
Additionally, the province is working to relocate the Osong Food Safety Management Certification Institute and the Sejong Livestock Environment Management Institute to Gongju, expecting to attract about 40,000 educational visitors annually. Preparations are also underway to co-host the International Chestnut Industry Expo in 2028 with Gongju, Buyeo, and Cheongyang.
