Jeonnam Institute of Marine and Fisheries Science Uses AI to Predict Aquaculture Environments in Response to Climate Crisis
Building a Smart Marine Forecasting System
to Prevent Damage to Aquaculture Farms
Jeonnam Province announced on August 20 that it is accelerating the development of the "Future Aquaculture Environment Forecasting Service," which uses AI to predict aquaculture environments and provide this information to fishers, in order to minimize damage to aquaculture farms caused by rapidly changing marine environments due to climate change.
The Future Aquaculture Environment Forecasting Service is an intelligent marine environment prediction platform that collects and analyzes key marine environment data such as water temperature, salinity, pH, currents, and red tides in real time, forecasts aquaculture conditions for the upcoming week, and provides advance information to aquaculture operators.
Selected as part of a public contest by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the project will be carried out from 2024 to 2028 with a total budget of 34.5 billion won, and a pilot service will be launched focusing on major aquaculture-dense areas in Jeonnam.
Currently, Jeonnam Province is collaborating with five local governments-Goheung County, Shinan County, Wando County, Jindo County, and Haenam County-as well as the Jeonnam Information and Culture Industry Promotion Agency and others to develop a high-resolution marine environment prediction model, customized alarm systems for each aquaculture farm, and a mobile-based forecast notification service.
In particular, by establishing an early warning system for disaster-level marine changes such as high water temperatures, low oxygen, red tides, and typhoons, the province is working to develop technologies that can be applied in actual aquaculture sites, including preventing mass mortality of farmed organisms, adjusting feed input, and supporting emergency evacuation decisions.

Kim Chungnam, Director of the Jeonnam Institute of Marine and Fisheries Science, stated, "In the era of climate change, aquaculture must shift so that farm environments can be predicted at any time," adding, "We will commercialize the Future Aquaculture Environment Forecasting Service as soon as possible so that aquaculture operators can establish data-driven response strategies."
