Special Prosecutor Summons Im Jongdeuk for Questioning as Suspect in Corporal Chae Case Tomorrow
Kim Donghyuk and Yeom Bohyun to Be Summoned on August 13
Special Prosecutor Lee Myunghyun's team, which is investigating allegations of external pressure in the probe into the death of Marine Corps Corporal Chae, will summon Im Jongdeuk, a Member of the People Power Party and former Second Deputy Director of the National Security Office under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, as a suspect on August 12.
Special Prosecutor Jeong Minyoung stated at a regular briefing on August 11, "We plan to investigate what kind of communications Representative Im, who was then the Second Deputy Director of the National Security Office, had with officials from the Ministry of National Defense, the Marine Corps, and the Presidential Office at the time."
Representative Im is being investigated as a suspect on charges including abuse of power and obstruction of the exercise of rights. On July 31, 2023, when former President Yoon reportedly became enraged after receiving the initial investigation report on Corporal Chae's case?a meeting referred to as the "VIP Outrage" meeting?Representative Im did not attend due to personal vacation plans. However, on August 2, 2023, when the Marine Corps investigation team transferred the case to the police, he is known to have been in close contact with former National Defense Secretary Im Kihun, former Marine Corps Commander Kim Gyehwan, and others.
The special prosecutor's team plans to focus its investigation on whether Representative Im was involved in the retrieval of the transfer records related to Corporal Chae's case, as well as the instructions given by former President Yoon at the time. Previously, on July 11, the special prosecutor's team conducted a search and seizure of Representative Im's residence and other locations.

Meanwhile, on August 13, the special prosecutor's team plans to summon Kim Donghyuk, former head of the Ministry of National Defense's prosecution team, and military prosecutor Yeom Bohyun, who investigated and indicted Colonel Park, to question them as suspects regarding allegations that Park Jeonghun, then head of the Marine Corps investigation team, was targeted in the probe into Corporal Chae's case.
