Samtae Village Forest is a village forest stretching approximately 800 meters along the Samtaecheon stream in front of Samtae Village, Hago-ri, Seongsong-myeon, Gochang County. It blends harmoniously with the surrounding farmland, offering exceptional scenic value.
It is the largest colony of weeping willows in Korea, with 95 old weeping willows and a total of 224 large trees of various species, all stably maintained to create a magnificent view.
For over 200 years, this large traditional village forest has served as a riparian and windbreak forest, protecting the village from various disasters. It is recorded in the 19th-century 'Jeollado Mujanghyeondo' and is known through oral tradition as a feng shui protective forest, giving it significant historical and spiritual meaning.
In particular, according to stories passed down by village residents, the forest has a long-standing history in which trees were planted to serve as stakes to anchor the boat-shaped village and prevent it from being swept away by the rough Samtaecheon stream. This adds to its value as a precious cultural heritage, embodying the wisdom of ancestors who lived in harmony with nature and the collective wishes of the community.
The county has made multifaceted efforts for the designation of Samtae Village Forest as a Natural Monument, including academic research and the preparation of data reports.
Shim Deokseop, the county governor, stated, "The designation of Samtae Village Forest as a Natural Monument is evidence that the history and nature of Gochang are alive and breathing, and it is a source of pride for our residents." He added, "We will continue to do our best to systematically preserve and manage this valuable national heritage, and to provide a special experience to everyone who visits Gochang by utilizing it."
