Samsung E&A and Nel Launch Green Hydrogen Production Solution "CompassH2"
Full-scale Entry into the Global Hydrogen Market
Joint Development Following Partnership Agreement
Samsung E&A is launching a green hydrogen production solution, marking the company's full-scale entry into the global hydrogen market.
On May 22, Samsung E&A announced that it unveiled 'CompassH2,' a solution co-developed with global electrolysis company Nel, at the 'World Hydrogen Summit' currently being held in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The World Hydrogen Summit is the largest hydrogen-related event in Europe; this year, more than 700 companies from 130 countries participated to discuss the entire hydrogen industry.
The newly introduced CompassH2 is a technology solution that covers all phases of green hydrogen plant construction, from pre-feasibility studies to EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) and quality assurance. By combining Samsung E&A and Nel's extensive EPC experience with advanced alkaline electrolysis technology, the companies have developed an optimal green hydrogen production solution that overcomes the limitations of the traditional approach, where electrolyzer technology providers and EPC contractors operated separately.
The company applied design optimization technology to CompassH2, reducing the facility footprint by 20% compared to conventional hydrogen production plants. In addition, by effectively arranging high-efficiency electrolyzer stacks and auxiliary facilities, the solution increases green hydrogen production efficiency and lowers hydrogen production costs.
Samsung E&A and Nel have been working to develop the optimal green hydrogen production solution based on their differentiated technologies and capabilities. In March, the two companies formalized their collaboration by signing an equity acquisition and partnership agreement, and have now launched the jointly developed CompassH2. Going forward, the companies plan to continue enhancing the solution, including the application of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolysis technology to CompassH2.
Samsung E&A has declared that, in the era of energy transition, it aims to become a company that solves social challenges through technology as a core mid- to long-term strategy. The company is accelerating its efforts in energy transition and new eco-friendly businesses, focusing on three E&Able strategies: ▲E&Able Low (low-carbon), ▲E&Able Zero (carbon-free), and ▲E&Able Circle (environment).
