Jung Taewoon Receives Exemplary Child Award from Bucheon City
Saved His Mother by Performing CPR Learned at School
City to Expand Free CPR Training for Citizens
A nine-year-old elementary school student received a certificate of exemplary child award on Children's Day after saving his mother, who had collapsed at home, by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) he had learned at school.
The city of Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, announced on May 7 that it had presented the exemplary child award to Jung Taewoon, a third grader at Buwon Elementary School, during the "103rd Children's Day Commemoration Ceremony" held at City Hall on May 1.

Upon discovering his mother, Jung immediately called 119 as he had learned at school and performed CPR himself until emergency responders arrived.
When the 119 paramedics arrived at the scene, Jung's mother was in critical condition with almost no pulse. However, after emergency treatment using an automated external defibrillator (AED), her pulse was restored. Thanks to Jung's quick response, Ms. A regained her breathing and pulse, and after five days, she regained consciousness and is now able to carry out her daily life.
Jung is known to have received CPR training a total of four times at daycare centers and school. The city explained that Jung's ability to recall what he learned in training and perform CPR with the correct posture and technique played a crucial role in preserving Ms. A's golden time for survival.

I checked if she was breathing, called 119, and performed CPR until the paramedics arrived. I was scared because my mom had collapsed, but I stayed calm." He also explained how he came to learn CPR, saying, "I learned it at daycare from the age of six, at the Taekwondo studio, and also at elementary school," which drew attention.
In March, Jung also received a commendation from the chief of Bucheon Fire Station, stating, "When my mom collapsed, I immediately recalled what I had learned at school. I am happy that my mother has recovered, and I believe my friends can also act calmly if they do as they were taught."

In response, Bucheon City has decided to strengthen free CPR training to improve emergency response skills among all citizens. Bucheon Mayor Cho Yongik stated, "If CPR is administered immediately, the survival rate nearly doubles, so initial response is of utmost importance. We will work to expand CPR education."
