Uiseong County Installs Sediment Control Nets to Prevent Water Pollution from Wildfire Debris
320 Meters of Sediment and Pollution Prevention Nets Installed in Five Rivers Affected by Wildfire
Enhanced Water Quality Monitoring Implemented
On April 24, Uiseong County in North Gyeongsang Province announced that it will install sediment and pollution prevention nets in major rivers to prevent ash and soot debris from the recent wildfire from flowing into the rivers and causing water pollution.
This measure aims to minimize secondary environmental damage that could occur when rain causes soil and debris from wildfire-affected areas to flow into nearby rivers.
This project, with a total budget of 50 million KRW, will involve installing the nets at eight locations along five rivers: Micheon, Namdaecheon, Gwangsancheon, Anpyeongcheon, and Sinpyeongcheon. The sediment and pollution prevention nets are scheduled to be installed at a total length of 320 meters by April 25. In particular, installation has already been completed as a priority in the Bunto Bridge section of Namdaecheon, where the river is wide and the water flow is high.
Uiseong County is also conducting water quality monitoring in accordance with living environment standards alongside the installation of the nets. If any water quality abnormalities occur, such as changes in pH caused by debris, the county plans to implement purification measures such as the application of beneficial microorganisms.
Kim Jusu, the county governor, stated, "We are taking proactive measures to prevent secondary damage from wildfire debris entering rivers and leading to water pollution," adding, "We will do our utmost to maintain a clean and safe local environment through continuous water quality monitoring and purification activities."
