Yoon Byungtae, Mayor of Naju, "Doing Our Best to Prevent Wildfires"
Public Appeal Posted on Naju City's Website
Strengthening Wildfire Monitoring System and Leading Citizen Guidance
Naju City in Jeollanam-do has launched an all-out response to prevent the outbreak of wildfires that have been occurring one after another during the dry spring season.
As large-scale wildfires have recently caused significant damage nationwide, Naju Mayor Yoon Byungtae issued a “Public Appeal for Spring Wildfire Prevention” through the city’s official website on the 26th, calling for active participation from citizens.
In the appeal, Mayor Yoon expressed deep concern, stating, “Recent wildfires across the country have destroyed more than 37,000 hectares of forest, which is over half the area of Seoul. This is not just a loss of trees, but the disappearance of precious ecosystems and habitats that we must pass on to future generations.”
In response to the increased risk of wildfires during the spring, Naju City has been operating the “Spring Wildfire Prevention Headquarters” since February 1.
The city has deployed wildfire suppression helicopters and professional firefighting personnel to maintain an emergency response posture, and is maximizing initial response capabilities through cooperation with related agencies such as the fire department, police, and military units.
In particular, Mayor Yoon presented the following key guidelines to citizens for wildfire prevention: “Do not burn rice straw, agricultural by-products, or any kind of waste in forests or adjacent areas”; “Do not smoke or handle open flames near forests”; “Do not enter restricted or closed hiking trails and do not carry flammable materials”; “In the event of a wildfire, quickly descend in the direction opposite to the wind, avoiding valleys”; and “During Cheongmyeong and Hansik, do not carry fire sources when entering mountains or visiting graves.”
