'Punk Rock' Pioneer New York Dolls Vocalist David Johansen Passes Away
David Johansen, the vocalist of 'New York Dolls,' a band known as pioneers of punk rock, passed away at the age of 75 on the 28th of last month (local time) at his home in New York City after battling cancer.
According to the AP News on the 1st, New York Dolls, formed in the 1970s, gained prominence in New York's performance clubs with their long hair, heavy makeup, and women's clothing on stage, greatly influencing later punk rock bands. The New York Times (NYT) reported that Johansen was battling stage 4 cancer, a brain tumor, and a fractured spine.
However, the band did not achieve commercial success and faced internal conflicts and drug addiction, which hindered their activities. They ultimately disbanded in 1977.
After the band's breakup, Johansen continued his music career with a solo band under his own name and expanded his activities into various music genres and acting under the stage name Buster Poindexter.
