Police Refer Malicious Commenters Who Insulted Wrong Woman in Nexon 'Jipge Sonkarlak' Case
Charges of Defamation and Insult
Some netizens who deliberately included a ‘pointing finger’ in a promotional video for a game by the game company Nexon to insult men, and who revealed and insulted the identity of an unrelated female illustrator, will be referred to the prosecution.
On the 4th, the Seoul Seocho Police Station announced that some of the 86 people who posted insulting messages will be sent to the prosecution within this week. They are suspected of defamation and insult under the Information and Communications Network Act, as well as violations of the Stalking Punishment Act. However, some were cleared of charges.
This case arose in November 2023 when a character in Nexon’s game promotional video made a pointing finger gesture. Some netizens reacted strongly, claiming that the hand gesture was a symbol of misandry. They spread the personal information of Mr. A, who was said to have drawn the pointing finger gesture, and subjected him to insults and death threats. However, the person who created the video was a male animator in his 40s.
