Ulsan Genome Service Industry Regulatory Free Zone, Temporary Approval Conversion and Extension... Announcement of the 14th Regulatory Free Zone Committee Results
2-Year Extension Enables Rapid Market Entry
On the 25th, Ulsan City announced that the Ulsan Genome Service Industry Regulatory Free Zone project, which has been promoted over the past four years, will be converted to a temporary permit and its duration extended following the decision of the 14th Regulatory Free Zone Committee.
The temporary permit system allows regulatory relaxation for Regulatory Free Zone projects that have proven safety through demonstration, enabling commercialization before legal amendments are made. Through this, verified products can quickly enter the market.
The temporary permit period for the Ulsan Genome Free Zone is two years, from December 1, 2024, to November 30, 2026, and the zone will be terminated if related regulations are resolved within this period.
The Ulsan Genome Service Industry Regulatory Free Zone was designated as a free zone starting August 2020 to address the lack of legal grounds for industrial use of biodata secured through the 10,000-person genome project and has been promoting demonstration projects.
Through the free zone project, stable achievements have been made such as the establishment and operation of genome analysis dedicated equipment, development of diagnostic markers for various diseases, and construction of an infectious disease response platform.
Additionally, various economic and technological achievements have been accomplished, including attracting five out-of-area companies, securing 59.8 billion KRW in investment, filing patents and acquiring intellectual property rights, producing prototypes, and providing technical consulting support.
