[US Election 2024]
U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris officially conceded defeat and accepted the election results on the 6th (local time).
According to the Harris campaign, Vice President Harris called Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump during the day to congratulate him on his victory and expressed her position. The campaign explained that during the call, Vice President Harris discussed the importance of a peaceful transfer of power and being a president for all Americans.
Having lost the presidential election, Vice President Harris is scheduled to deliver a concession speech at Howard University in Washington, DC, starting at 4 p.m. Eastern Time on the same day. Howard University, a historically Black university, was established as a specialized educational institution for Black people before the Civil Rights Act banning racial discrimination was enacted, and it is Vice President Harris's alma mater. Major foreign media outlets, including The New York Times (NYT), reported that the Harris campaign is currently sending messages to supporters in Washington, DC, expressing gratitude and requesting attendance at the event.
The 47th U.S. presidential election held the previous day ended in a landslide victory for former President Trump, defying expectations of a nail-biting race. Former President Trump secured victory in Michigan (15 electoral votes), a Rust Belt battleground state, sweeping all three former Democratic strongholds known as the 'Blue Wall,' just as in 2016. As a result, the number of electoral votes secured by former President Trump increased to 292. Early that morning, he also won Wisconsin (10 electoral votes), another Blue Wall battleground state, securing 276 electoral votes, surpassing the magic number of 270 needed for election.
When all votes are counted, former President Trump is expected to secure 312 electoral votes, while Vice President Harris is projected to have 226 electoral votes. In 2016, when Trump first won the presidential election, he secured 304 electoral votes. However, at that time, he lost the popular vote to Democratic candidate former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
