Paju City Transforms Red-Light District into Public Space... Hosts 'Walking the Travel Path' Event
On the 5th, Paju City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 6th that it conducted a citizen education program called ‘Walking the Travel Path’ at Yeonpung-ri Cultural Theater and the vicinity of the prostitution district to complete the ‘Women-Friendly City Paju’ initiative.

View original imageAbout 40 citizens participated in this ‘Walking the Travel Path,’ including members of the Unjeong 3-dong Development Council and Residents’ Autonomy Committee, Unjeong 6-dong Neighborhood Association, the Good Shepherd Sisters, and the anti-prostitution civic action group Clearing, demonstrating strong public interest in the closure of the prostitution district.
‘Walking the Travel Path’ is an educational program conducted since 2023 to raise awareness of gender equality and the closure of prostitution districts. Through lectures on the realities and victim cases of the prostitution district, it aims to reflect on society’s misconceptions about prostitution, build consensus through citizen participation, and embody the citizens’ will to close the prostitution district and create a safe living environment.
Following the ‘Walking the Travel Path’ event, the ‘Paju City Community Leaders Gender Equality Education’ was also held, providing an opportunity to enhance gender equality awareness and promote cultural diffusion among the Unjeong 6-dong Neighborhood Association and Paju City officials.

A citizen who participated in the ‘Walking the Travel Path’ said, “Before today’s education, I did not realize the seriousness of the issue because the prostitution district seemed far from where I live,” adding, “Since the harms of prostitution are not confined to one area, all citizens need to understand its seriousness and take an interest together.”
