Shin Su-jeong, Gwangju City Council Chair, Calls for Improvement of Electricity Tariff System in the Railway Industry
City and Provincial Council Chairpersons Association Passes Proposal... Delivered to Government and National Assembly
The "Proposal for Improvement of the Electric Railway Electricity Rate System" submitted by Shin Su-jeong, Chairperson of the Gwangju Metropolitan Council, was approved at the 6th Extraordinary Meeting of the Association of Chairpersons of Provincial and Metropolitan Councils of the Republic of Korea. The meeting was held on the 29th in Boryeong, Chungnam.
The proposal calls for the establishment of a new electricity rate category considering the public interest nature of the railway industry and urges improvement in the method of calculating maximum demand power.
Chairperson Shin pointed out, "Since Korea Electric Power Corporation introduced a cost-linked tariff system, electricity rates have been raised several times, causing significant financial difficulties for institutions operating railways."
She also emphasized, "As the electric railway business is a public service aimed at citizen convenience as public transportation, it is necessary to establish a new rate category similar to the public-purpose educational tariff. The method of calculating maximum demand power should also be improved to reflect the characteristics of railways."
