Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, Starts Challenge to Protect the Late President Kim Dae-jung's Residence
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, started a challenge on the morning of October 22nd to urge the registration of the residence in Donggyo-dong, Mapo-gu, where the late President Kim Dae-jung and his wife lived for over 50 years, as a National Registered Cultural Heritage site.
The Donggyo-dong residence of President Kim Dae-jung, the first Korean Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a significant figure in the development of democracy in the Republic of Korea, is a space encompassing modern and contemporary Korean history. Mapo-gu explained that registering it as a National Registered Cultural Heritage site is urgent to preserve its historical value.
Accordingly, Mapo-gu plans to widely spread interest and consensus for the purchase of the residence through the challenge for National Registered Cultural Heritage registration, targeting not only local residents but also political figures.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, who announced the start of the challenge that day, appealed to over 100 leaders from politics and administration, including Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon, Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, former Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon, and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, to participate.
Mayor Park Gang-su emphasized, “Honoring President Kim Dae-jung, the first Korean Nobel laureate who devoted himself to peace and democratization in Korea, is a natural act as a Korean regardless of political views or ideology,” adding, “Therefore, the Donggyo-dong residence is a cultural heritage that we must protect even more, and Mapo-gu will do its best to preserve the residence.”
In addition, Mapo-gu plans to preserve the Donggyo-dong residence as a historic space by establishing a support organization for the purchase of the residence, granting the honorary road name ‘Kim Dae-jung-gil,’ and implementing support projects such as installing information boards.
