Handonghun "Medical community participation in the ruling-opposition parliamentary consultative body... Grateful for the decision"
The Korean Medical Association and KAMC Decide to Join Consultative Body
Launch of Ruling and Opposition Lawmakers' Consultative Body Expected Next Week
Han Dong-hoon: "Focusing Solely on Public Health and Problem Solving"
On the 22nd, Han Dong-hoon, leader of the People Power Party, expressed his gratitude, saying, "I deeply appreciate the medical community's decision," regarding the Korean Medical Association and the Korean Association of Medical Colleges (KAMC) deciding to participate in the ruling-opposition-medical-government consultative body.
On the same day, Han said on Facebook, "It seems that the ruling-opposition-medical-government consultative body will be activated."
He continued, "I expect this to be a starting point to resolve the medical situation that has long caused inconvenience to the public. I respect the medical community's opinion that the autonomy of medical school academic operations and the Korea Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation (KIMEE) must be sufficiently guaranteed to foster good medical professionals," adding, "We must focus solely on the health of the people and solve the problems. Our People Power Party will also do our best together."
Since proposing the formation of the ruling-opposition-medical-government consultative body on the 6th of last month to resolve medical service gaps and improve regional and essential medical systems, Han has been continuously communicating with the medical community.
The ruling-opposition-medical-government consultative body is expected to seek ways to halt collective actions by the medical community due to medical-government conflicts and to normalize medical services.
Han Ji-a, a doctor and chief spokesperson for the People Power Party, explained to reporters at the National Assembly communication office when asked, "What conditions did the medical community present for this participation?" saying, "There is no limitation on the agenda, but the principle of having no preconditions has been maintained. There has been long-standing behind-the-scenes communication, and over the weekend, we received messages about a progressive direction. Until the end, Leader Han personally communicated and persuaded them."
Regarding the Korean Medical Association and KAMC, which expressed willingness to participate this time, she explained, "KAMC is an association of deans of 41 medical schools, has expertise in medical education, and continues communication with students. The Korean Medical Association is a subordinate organization of the Korean Medical Association and a higher medical society that oversees the examination questions for residents."
Han added, "Since it is composed of medical school professors, I understand they also maintain communication with residents."

When asked, "The government has consistently stated its position regarding the medical school quota issue. Will government communication also take place within the consultative body?" Han responded, "The medical community advocates for academic autonomy and the autonomy of the Korea Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation (KIMEE, under the revised ordinance). We respect those aspects, but it is inappropriate to discuss specific agenda items. I invite you to join the ruling-opposition-medical-government consultative body and engage in dialogue."
