Democratic-Joguk Honam Battle, First Victory for Democratic Party... Candidate Josangrae Elected Gokseong County Governor
In the 10·16 by-election for the re-election of the governor of Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, Democratic Party candidate Jo Sang-rae (66) was elected.
According to the vote count status from the Central Election Commission on the 16th, candidate Jo won with 55.3% (8,706 votes). In the Gokseong-gun governor re-election where 100% of the votes were counted, Park Woong-du of the Joguk Innovation Party came in second with 35.9% (5,648 votes). Independent candidate Lee Seong-ro received 5.4%, and Choi Bong-ui of the People Power Party received 3.5%.
Jo, a native of Gokseong, graduated from Sungkyunkwan University with a degree in sociology and entered politics in 2006 as a member of the Jeollanam-do Provincial Assembly during the 4th term of direct elections, serving two terms. He previously ran for governor as a candidate of the Democratic Peace Party and as an independent but repeatedly placed second. In this election, held again due to former Gokseong-gun governor Lee Sang-cheol's violation of the Public Official Election Act, Jo was nominated as the Democratic Party candidate and won the election.
