View original imageHyundai Mobis is partnering with German optics company Zeiss to develop technology that utilizes the entire front windshield of a car as a display.
On the 13th, Hyundai Mobis announced that it signed a business cooperation agreement with Zeiss at its Yongin Technology Research Center in Gyeonggi Province to jointly develop this 'Holographic Windshield Display (Holographic HUD)'.
The Holographic HUD is a technology that uses the vehicle's front windshield as a transparent display, allowing users to check various driving information and enjoy infotainment functions such as music, videos, and games. This represents a revolutionary evolution from existing head-up displays, which only showed relatively simple information like driving speed, navigation routes, and overspeed warnings. It is explained that since drivers can see all information at once without significantly moving their gaze while looking forward, it also contributes to driving safety.
Additionally, the need for various display devices on the existing instrument panel or the center of the front row will disappear, which is expected to completely change the vehicle interior front design. As a next-generation display technology with no mass production cases yet, according to the global market research firm OMDIA Research, the worldwide holographic HUD market is estimated to grow to about 7 million units by 2030.
The two companies plan to start mass production of the product as early as 2027. To develop this technology, they plan to actively mobilize their specialized technical capabilities and maximize synergy effects. Hyundai Mobis will oversee system development and develop and supply the automotive projector, a key component technology. Zeiss will develop and supply the thin film required for the projector, which is about the thickness of a human hair (approximately 0.1 mm).

Jung Soo-kyung, Vice President and Head of Hyundai Mobis's Electronics BU, said, "Starting with new technology cooperation using the vehicle's front windshield with Germany's Zeiss, we plan to expand our technological cooperation that combines optics and automobiles into various fields such as in-vehicle and exterior holographic displays and 3D rear lamps."
