"Intentional Traffic Accident for Insurance Money"… Cohabiting Couple Sentenced to Prison for Pocketing Tens of Millions
A man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s who deliberately caused a traffic accident to collect tens of millions of won were sentenced to prison.
According to the legal community on the 31st, Judge In Hyeong-jun of the Criminal Division 9 at the Seoul Northern District Court sentenced A (34), who was indicted for violating the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud and the Road Traffic Act (unlicensed driving), to one year in prison and a fine of 400,000 won on the 22nd, and sentenced B (27) to six months in prison. The two were cohabiting.
A was driving while B was seated in the passenger seat when they deliberately caused a collision with vehicles that violated traffic signals and changed lanes. They falsely claimed pain and received a total of 25.33 million won from the victims over five occasions for medical expenses. A is also charged with unlicensed driving a total of 30 times from November 2020 to around May 2022.

The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "Defendant A denied some of the crimes and showed no remorse, and some of the crimes were committed during trials related to similar offenses," and "he made no special efforts to restore the damages caused by the insurance fraud." Regarding B, the court explained, "The damages from the crime have not been restored," but added, "she is a first-time offender, her involvement in the crime was relatively minor, and she is showing remorse."
