Korea National Oil Corporation Holds Symposium to Share Research Achievements in Oil Exploration of Donghae-Ulleung Basin
Busan BEXCO to Participate as a Sponsor of the International Geological Congress from 25th to 31st
Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) is participating as a sponsoring organization and operating a promotional exhibition hall at the ‘2024 Busan International Geological Congress (IGC 2024 Busan)’, which will be held at BEXCO in Busan from the 25th to the 31st.
This congress, known as the “Olympics of Geological Sciences,” is an international academic event attended by about 7,000 geologists and experts from 121 countries. It has been held every four years, rotating continents, since it began in Paris, France in 1878. This is the first time the IGC is being held in Korea.
KNOC will present the results of joint industry-academia research on the South Sea continental shelf at the academic session titled “Geology and Tectonics of the Western Pacific Margins.”
In addition, on the 29th, KNOC will share research achievements in the fields of geology and petroleum exploration in the Ulleung Basin of the East Sea at a special symposium on “Exploration of the Ulleung Basin in the East Sea,” co-hosted with the IGC 2024 Organizing Committee.
KNOC plans to introduce the progress of the domestic exploration master plan, the “Gwanggaeto Project,” and the achievements of identifying promising deep-sea structures in the East Sea. In relation to this, Professor Kim Kibum of Pusan National University, Professor Lee Geunsang of Hanyang University, and Professor Gary Parker, Emeritus Professor at the University of Illinois, USA, will make presentations on topics related to global deep-sea oil fields.
Afterwards, a panel discussion on the “Importance and Challenges of Deep-Sea Exploration in the East Sea” will follow. This symposium will be open free of charge not only to industry and academia participants attending the conference but also to the general public interested in petroleum exploration, helping to enhance understanding of scientific facts related to the highly publicized deep-sea exploration in the East Sea.
KNOC President Kim Dongseob said, “I hope this symposium will broaden scientific understanding of petroleum exploration in the Ulleung Basin of the East Sea and serve as an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation between KNOC and domestic and international geologists for petroleum exploration in Korea.”
Through this congress, KNOC plans to faithfully fulfill its role as a public enterprise responding to global energy issues such as resource security and the transition to low-carbon energy, and to continuously strengthen cooperation with academic and industrial sectors both domestically and internationally.
