On the 27th, Governor Kim attended the 'New Space Era, Climate Satellite Forum' held at Dasan Hall in the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office to share the current status of climate crisis response using satellites. He stated, "If the past growth drivers of South Korea were AI (Artificial Intelligence), batteries, and chips?ABC?now there is New ABC: Aerospace, Bio, and Climate Tech."
He added, "Gyeonggi Province has already been actively engaged in bio and climate change response, and I am pleased that through the satellite launch plan, we are putting bold visions and policies for aerospace into practice."
Governor Kim particularly stressed, "The Gyeonggi Province satellite plan has made significant strides and meaningful progress in three aspects: scientific response to climate change, leading the satellite industry as a future growth industry for Gyeonggi Province, and cooperation among satellite launch entities."
He first explained, "Gyeonggi Province is actively responding to the climate crisis through climate insurance and climate funds, and the satellite launch is meaningful as the most scientific method of responding to the climate crisis."
He continued, "Secondly, space is related to IT, big data, communications, and defense industries. Gyeonggi Province, the center of South Korea’s industry, has taken an important step to lead South Korea’s future growth through this satellite launch plan. Lastly, by cooperating with global satellite launch entities and creating synergy effects, we can establish a strong foundation that will bring a major turning point in industrial development."
About 300 people attended the forum, including members of the provincial council, private experts, provincial and municipal officials, the Carbon Neutral Support Center, and residents.
The event began with a lecture titled ‘The Present and Future Given by Satellites’ by the science communicator from Gwedo, followed by an expert panel discussion.
The panel discussion was chaired by Jeong Su-jong, Director of the Climate Tech Center at Seoul National University. Panelists included ▲ Kim Kyung-geun, Head of the Satellite Systems Division at the Agency for Defense Development ▲ Lee Sang-gyu, Senior Researcher at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute ▲ Oh Hyun-woong, Director of Industry-Academia Cooperation at Korea Aerospace University ▲ Nam Myung-yong, CEO of Lumir Co., Ltd. ▲ Choi Beom-gyu, Service Research Team Leader of the Earth Information Division at SIA Co., Ltd.
Starting with this forum, Gyeonggi Province plans to concretize the ‘Climate Satellite Launch’ project, one of the key tasks in the second half of the 8th local government term, and communicate with the provincial council.
The Gyeonggi climate satellite is designed not only to monitor greenhouse gases but also to comprehensively observe and analyze climate crises such as urban and forest changes due to climate change, disaster prediction, and response.
