Chairperson Choi Hojung of Seoul Metropolitan Council Meets Participants of the Asia Foundation Youth Program
'2024 Northeast Asia Youth Exchange Program' Korea, China, Japan, Mongolia Youth Delegations Visit Seoul Metropolitan Council
Choi Hojung, Chairperson of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, met on the 26th with youth delegations from Korea, China, Japan, and Mongolia participating in the ‘2024 Northeast Asia Youth Exchange Program’ organized by the Asia Foundation in the U.S.
Attending the meeting were Kim Gilyoung, Chairperson of the Urban Planning and Balance Committee, Lee Sangwook, Vice Chairperson, Lee Hyowon of the Education Committee, and Kim Dongwook of the Urban Safety and Construction Committee.
The youth delegations visited Korea to tour public institutions implementing domestic carbon neutrality policies and conduct field inspections under the theme of carbon neutrality transition. On the day, the delegations received a briefing on Seoul’s carbon zero policies.
Chairperson Choi said, “Korea, China, Japan, and Mongolia are geographically close, so we must cooperate closely on environmental issues,” adding, “I am pleased that young people from each country are interested in environmental issues and are participating in the program.”
Chairperson Choi introduced, “Among the 11 standing committees of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, the Environment and Water Resources Committee handles climate and environmental policies,” and said, “Nowadays, to respond to the climate crisis, all sectors prioritize the environment in policy-making and other areas.”
Seoul aims to be a carbon-neutral city by 2050, with a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2033. To achieve this, the city is making multifaceted efforts to create a climate crisis-safe city through expanding eco-friendly mobility and restoring green ecosystems.
The Asia Foundation, established in 1954, is an international development cooperation organization headquartered in San Francisco, USA. It promotes various projects including international cooperation and governance, centered on branches in 18 Asian countries including Korea and in Washington DC.
