Gyeonggi-do Provides 2 Million KRW Support for Egg and Sperm Freezing Procedures
Gyeonggi Province will provide up to 2 million KRW in support for egg and sperm freezing procedure costs. This support project is a policy response to the trend of delayed marriage, the increase in the average maternal age, and the rise in infertility treatment cases.
Currently, freezing eggs or sperm requires 2.5 to 5 million KRW per procedure, and since it is not covered by health insurance, the financial burden is significant.
The support covers preliminary examination fees for egg and sperm retrieval, procedure costs, and initial storage fees (once in a lifetime).
The target group includes 600 men and women aged 20 to 49 residing in Gyeonggi Province. Support is provided not only to women but also to men, with up to 2 million KRW for women and up to 300,000 KRW for men.
The egg and sperm freezing procedure cost support is planned to be implemented next year after prior procedures such as consultations with the Ministry of Health and Welfare's social security system.
Gyeonggi Province will also expand the Gyeonggi Regional Infertility and Depression Counseling Center program to respond to counseling demands related to infertility and depression.
Previously, in July last year, Gyeonggi Province abolished the income criteria that only supported households with income below 180% of the median income to reduce the economic burden on infertile households.
Then, starting from January this year, the residency requirement was changed from "residing in the province for more than 6 months" to "residing in Gyeonggi Province as of the application date," effectively removing the residency criterion. Additionally, in February this year, the limit on infertility treatment support, previously capped at 21 procedures, was expanded to 25 procedures.
