Gwangbokhoe Gwangju Metropolitan City Branch Urges Kim Hyung-seok, Director of the Independence Hall, to Resign
The Gwangbokhoe Gwangju Metropolitan City Branch (Branch Chief Go Wook) issued an urgent statement opposing the appointment of Kim Hyung-seok, the new director of the Independence Hall, who is embroiled in controversy over a pro-Japanese historical perspective, and called for his resignation.
Go Wook, the head of the Gwangbokhoe Gwangju Metropolitan City Branch, along with about 10 members, stated at a rally held at the Veterans Hall in Chipyeong-dong, Seo-gu, at 11 a.m. on the 9th, "We express deep concern over the appointment of Kim Hyung-seok to the position of director of the Independence Hall, which is entrusted with honoring the noble spirit of Korea's independence and correctly passing that spirit on to future generations."
They also criticized, "Kim Hyung-seok, a representative figure of the New Right, is a person who raises concerns about ideological bias and historical distortion," adding, "The New Right has distorted the history of the Republic of Korea and caused social controversy through attempts to belittle or reinterpret the history of the Japanese colonial period and the independence movement."
They continued, "It is questionable whether such a person can properly honor the history of the independence movement and pass it on to future generations in the sacred position of director of the Independence Hall," and urged, "We strongly oppose Kim Hyung-seok’s appointment as director of the Independence Hall and call for his resignation."
