Ranked 8th in the world, Shin Yu-bin lost 2-4 (11-9 11-13 10-12 7-11 12-10 7-11) to Hayata Hina (5th, Japan) in the women's singles bronze medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics held at South Paris Arena in Paris, France, on the 3rd (Korean time).
Previously, Shin Yu-bin was trailing 0-4 in head-to-head matches against Hayata, and she had to postpone her victory in their fifth encounter as well. Shin Yu-bin advanced to the semifinals by consecutively defeating Melissa Tapper (250th, Australia), Georgina Pota (71st, Hungary), Lily Zhang (29th, USA), and Hirano Miu (13th, Japan).
In the semifinals, she was defeated by Chen Meng (4th, China), ending her bid for the final. Although she did not reach the podium, Shin Yu-bin set a valuable record through this Olympics. It was the first time in 20 years since a Korean table tennis player reached the Olympic singles semifinals, following Kim Kyung-ah (bronze medal, women's singles) and Yoo Seung-min (gold medal, men's singles) at the 2004 Athens Games.
Additionally, Shin Yu-bin has already won an Olympic medal. She teamed up with Lim Jong-hoon (Korea Exchange) to win the bronze medal in mixed doubles. This marks the first time in 12 years since the 2012 London Games men's team silver medal that Korean table tennis produced an Olympic medalist.
