In response, Mapo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Park Gang-su) announced special support for cooling costs for vulnerable groups to prepare for the heatwave, drawing significant attention.
This initiative aims to help vulnerable groups enjoy a cool summer by alleviating their burden as the number of heat-related illness patients increases and the heatwave disaster warning level is raised.
The district will first support low-income vulnerable groups. The support targets 10,007 households residing in Mapo-gu as of the reference date (July 5, 2024), including basic livelihood security recipients, Seoul-type recipients, low-income single-parent families, and legally designated near-poor households.
Cooling costs of 50,000 KRW per household will be deposited into accounts on Monday, the 5th, without a separate application.
However, for vulnerable groups who have not registered accounts, use seizure-protected accounts, or have other reasons making account opening difficult, cash payments will be made at the local community service centers.
Additionally, the district will take the lead in preventing heat-related illnesses by providing early payment of cooling costs from June to September to 157 senior centers (public, private, and independent) within the area, ensuring that elderly residents vulnerable to heat can spend a cool and safe summer at these centers.
Resident A of Seongsan Apartment in Seongsan 2-dong expressed relief upon hearing the news of cooling cost support, saying, "With high prices making daily living tight and the heatwave adding worries about electricity bills, this support is a great help."
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, stated, "Mapo-gu has established a real-time heatwave situation management and response system to prepare for the heatwave. We will focus all efforts on disaster safety response so that all Mapo-gu residents can have a safe summer by intensively managing vulnerable groups and strengthening safety management at workplaces."
Since the end of May, Mapo-gu has been implementing a comprehensive heatwave countermeasure plan for about four months until the end of September to prevent casualties and accidents.
To this end, the district operates a heatwave countermeasure headquarters composed of eight departments responsible for heatwave-related tasks to comprehensively manage the heatwave situation. The focus is on heatwave damage prevention activities such as ▲operating cooling shelters, ▲protecting homeless people, ▲deploying disaster helpers, ▲conducting road water cleaning, and ▲safety management of hazardous facilities.
