View original imageThe first relay exhibition at Changjakgonggan Dugu, "Time to Spend with You," will provide an opportunity for artists, who have each been pursuing their creative activities in different places, to gather at Changjakgonggan Dugu, build and expand their own artistic worlds, and share this process with the public.
This exhibition features seven teams of resident artists at Changjakgonggan Dugu, including both artists with and without disabilities (Theater Company Epata, Kim Lia, Noman, Movement Project Dorothy, Shin Suhang, Shin Hyunchae, and Woo Jing), presenting works in various forms.
The resident artists, embracing both disabled and non-disabled creators, will become key figures in strengthening the identity of Changjakgonggan Dugu through collective projects based on cooperation and solidarity.
The first exhibiting artist is Woo Jing, who works with rust. Since 1997, Woo Jing has continued to create works about self-portraits and spaces. The artist has shown interest in creating works using iron, such as traditional Korean instruments, guitars, and cellos, in formats that allow the audience to touch the pieces. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Woo Jing created a heavy suitcase made of iron, symbolizing the heavy reality of restricted movement. Recently, Woo Jing has been using rust, produced from ironwork, to depict fading memories.
Woo Jing's "Fading Memories 2024" presents paintings created after transitioning from a sculptor to a painter due to aftereffects of shoulder surgery that made hammering difficult. The works depict lingering images and landscapes remaining in the artist's mind. Woo Jing stated, "I wanted to reveal that the way memories fade and the subtle, almost imperceptible changes and difficulties of preservation when rust is painted on a canvas-like surface are similar." Woo Jing's exhibition, which marks the start of the resident artist relay exhibition at Changjakgonggan Dugu, will be held in the exhibition hall until the 5th of next month.
The second exhibition will be a collaboration between Shin Suhang, who expresses personal stories felt in life, and Shin Hyunchae, who fills lonely times with vibrant vitality. The work "Socks Centaur" by Shin Suhang × Shin Hyunchae is inspired by the image of a centaur that came to mind when seeing socks turned inside out.
Just as a centaur combines human and horse, the images of socks imagined by the public and the artists merge, evoking memories of beautiful journeys where everyone set out wearing socks.
Shin Hyunchae explained, "Socks were like reliable friends that allowed us to go to wonderful places with loved ones. By visually interpreting precious memories and gathering socks in a warm, woven form, we can view what we once thought of as dirty in a positive light."
Shin Suhang added, "For Shin Hyunchae, socks are not just an extension of the skin but also extend to the mind. I hope this sense of obsession can be freely expressed through the artwork without being suppressed. By visualizing her idea of obsession together, we are unfolding the story of socks so far."
The second relay exhibition by Shin Suhang × Shin Hyunchae will be held at the Changjakgonggan Dugu exhibition hall from August 9 to August 31.
The 2024 Changjakgonggan Dugu resident artists relay exhibition will continue. The exhibition is open free of charge from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
