Creating sustainable quality senior jobs in the super-aged era, presenting an innovative job model through win-win cooperation between local community companies
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced plans to further accelerate the creation of sustainable, quality jobs for senior citizens on the occasion of the 7th anniversary of the establishment of the ‘Seongdong Future Job Corporation.’
South Korea is approaching a super-aged society by 2025, when the population aged 65 and over will account for more than 20% of the total population. This demographic shift is raising social issues such as elderly poverty, increased social security burdens, and a decline in the workforce.
To proactively address social problems in the super-aged era and create jobs for seniors preparing for life after retirement, the district established the ‘Seongdong Future Job Corporation’ in 2017 through a public-private joint investment.
Now celebrating its 7th anniversary, the ‘Seongdong Future Job Corporation’ has expanded its business sectors and profit-generating operations each year. It currently operates a total of 18 projects across four areas, including ▲ five Caf? Seoul Forest locations ▲ its own business sites such as snack bars and Yongbi Rest Area ▲ various service projects like neighborhood environment guardians, child traffic safety guardians, and park facility management ▲ and administrative consignment tasks. The number of employees has grown significantly from about 40 at its founding to 227, including 174 seniors and women with career experience.
As a local government-invested corporation and a stock company under commercial law, it is recognized as a leading model for job projects that secure both profitability and public interest. It received the Senior-Friendly Company Excellence Award (from the Korea Senior Human Resources Development Institute) twice, in 2018 and 2021.
Following the Grand Prize for Senior-Friendly Companies (Minister of Health and Welfare Award) in 2019, it also won the top prize in the job creation and employment improvement category at the 2020 National Basic Local Government Manifesto Best Practice Competition.
Employee satisfaction is high. An internal satisfaction survey conducted in December 2023 among 205 on-site workers showed a comprehensive satisfaction score of 83.92 points, an increase of 3.74 points compared to the previous year.
In particular, the workplace satisfaction category scored 89.17 points, and the work type category scored 87.22 points, indicating overall satisfaction with their work life. The application of Seongdong-gu’s living wage (11,436 KRW), which is 2.5% higher than the minimum wage (9,860 KRW), along with flexible working arrangements such as part-time and alternate-day shifts, are analyzed as key factors enhancing seniors’ job satisfaction.
The ‘Seongdong Future Job Corporation’ plans to continuously discover new businesses and profit-generating sites, using surplus profits from additional earnings to establish a foundation for job creation and further expand employment opportunities.
