View original imageThe trial of former Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, who was indicted on charges of demanding perjury in a case involving violations of the Public Official Election Act, is expected to conclude on September 30.
According to the legal community on the 8th, the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 33 (Presiding Judge Kim Dong-hyun), which is handling the perjury coaching allegations against Lee, plans to conduct the defendant's final arguments on September 30.
Typically, the sentencing hearing includes the prosecution's sentencing recommendation and the final statements. The court plans to complete witness examinations and documentary evidence investigations on the 22nd of this month and the 26th of next month.
Lee is suspected of having coached Kim Jin-sung, the late Kim Byung-ryang's secretary?Kim Byung-ryang being the former mayor of Seongnam?who appeared as a witness in the 2018 trial concerning violations of the Public Official Election Act.
Previously, in 2002, Lee was fined for impersonating a prosecutor along with former KBS PD Choi Cheol-ho while investigating allegations of preferential allotment in the Bundang Parkview case. Related to this, Lee was prosecuted for violating the Public Official Election Act by spreading false information when he claimed during his 2018 Gyeonggi Province gubernatorial campaign that he had been falsely accused.
The core of the allegations is that Lee demanded perjury from Kim in order to be acquitted in the Public Official Election Act trial.

Lee's case involving violations of the Public Official Election Act is also scheduled for a sentencing hearing on September 6, so verdicts regarding Lee are expected to be issued consecutively around October.
